Newport Harbor (15-2-5, 3-0 in league) has established itself as the favorite in the four-team Wave League, the lower division of the Sunset Conference which also includes Laguna Beach, Marina and Fountain Valley. Coach Justin Schroeder said his team is after the first league title in program history. Newport Harbor, ranked No. 7 in Division 1, has many skilled players and is particularly strong in the midfield with players like UC Santa Barbara-bound senior Emily Johnson and Sofia Velazquez, the two co-captains, as well as sophomore Reese Bodas.

“We’re excited we get to compete for a league championship and hopefully get back into CIF. We’re happy to play any of those Surf teams again. I’m sure they’d be happy to see us, too. If somehow us and Corona del Mar get matched up in CIF, that would be wild.”

Newport Harbor High sophomore Reese Bodas is better known as “Peanut,” not only to her teammates on the girls’ soccer field but also among many of her classmates at school.
Bodas got the nickname on her first club team, as a 7-year-old for Slammers FC. The team was coached by Daily Pilot Cup tournament director Kirk McIntosh and also featured five players — Nicole Laz,
Jan. 2nd at 6pm PST at Davidson Field.
Justin Schroeder had a vision of what Newport Harbor could be when he took charge of the girls soccer program two years ago, and Thursday’s 3-0 triumph in a showdown of unbeaten teams at Corona del Mar High served to confirm that the Sailors are, indeed, for real.
Newport Harbor (9-0-3), ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division 1, was clinical when it counted and flawless defensively in the Battle of the Bay rivalry game en route to its 11th shutout in a dozen outings and ninth in succession. Click here to read more.
